2020.10.01 20:54 sunnybug21 DAE lie about personal information when getting to know a new partner out of fear they might be mentally unstable in the long run?

Please excuse my word vomit of a title. I'm feeling very scatter brained after my most recent dating experience.
I had been seeing a man for about two and a half months. The last few weeks he started exhibiting controlling and narcissistic behaviors that I initially excused as insecurities due to him being older and making comments about how he's unhappy with his weight (I'm very health/fitness conscious and he was not). This weekend he blew me off and brushed it off like he was doing me a favor because I'm currently very stressed about employment. I told him I didn't appreciate the way he went about the situation and that all he had to do was ask what I needed instead of making assumptions about it.
After that it was like a switch flipped. He wanted to know where I was at, who I was with, what I was doing. He'd get upset if I didn't reply to his texts right away which was really off putting considering we've never been big texters. Even in situations where I told him what my plan was and that I'd be unavailable, just hours later he'd accuse me of "disappearing" because I was seeing someone else.
Last night I didn't respond to his message for an hour and a half and he got so angry. I ended it right then and spent the rest of the evening blocking him on everything and frantically googling myself to remove any personal information he might be able to dredge up on the world wide web. Today I am jumpy and have an awful feeling in the pit of my stomach. I'm angry that I didn't listen to my gut sooner and allowed this to happen in the first place.
This brings me to the point of my post. I always lie about where I live and my last name to potential partners. I keep the information close enough so that it's not so outlandish, but the city I live in and spelling of my last name I keep to myself. Sometimes I feel like I'm the crazy one in doing so but situations like this give me peace of mind that it's a sad reality of the world we live in.
I'm not one to make decisions out of fear and always try to see the best in people. But situations like this make me think I'm right to assume the worst and hope for the best.
Sometimes I really hate being a woman.

2020.10.01 20:45 eugenie32b Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) by source-level weaving

Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) by source-level weaving
Aspect-oriented programming is a very appealing concept for simplifying your codebase, creating clean code, improving modularity, structure of code and minimizing copy-paste errors.
Today, in most cases, weaving aspect's advices is implemented at the bytecode level, i.e. after compilation, a certain tool «weave» an additional byte code with the support of the required logic.
Our approach (as well as the approach of some other tools) is modifying the source code to implement aspect logic. With introduction of the .NET Compiler Platform (aka Roslyn), it is quite easy to achieve this goal, and the result gives certain advantages over the modification of the byte code itself.
You may think that aspect-oriented programming is not for you and does not particularly concern you, just a bunch of incomprehensible words, but in fact it is much easier than it seems, this is about the problems of real world product development and if you are a software developer, then you and your project can definitely get benefit from using it.
Especially in medium-large sized projects of a corporate level, where the requirements for the functionality of the products are formalized. For example, there may be a requirement — when setting the configuration flag, log all input parameters for all public methods. Or for all methods in a project to have a notification functionality that will send a message when a certain threshold of the execution time of a method is exceeded.
How would you do it without AOP? Either you ignore the rule and do it only for the most important parts of your program, or when writing new methods, you do copy-paste of similar code from neighboring methods, and you could imagine what copy-paste approach brings with it.
With AOP, it is very easy, you write an advice an apply it to the whole project's code and the job is done. When you need to update the logic, you will again update just the advice and it will be re-applied on the next transformation. Without AOP, some many updates throughout the project code, that most probably you will implement the changes only to the critical parts and leave everything else as is.
On the plus side is that your code will not look like a crater covered moon landscape, because it is sprinkled with such functionality, the same way as moon sprinkled with craters and when reading the code it looks like mixed with white noise.
It is my feeling that aspect-oriented programming in .Net ecosystem is significantly less popular in compared to the Java ecosystem. In my opinion, the main reason is the lack of free and open source tools that are comparable to the functionality and quality of Java ones.

How we start using AOP in our project

To improve developers' performance and at the same time make code's quality better, we widely use the automatic code generation capabilities, and also created several plugins and analyzers for Visual Studio, that are custom tailored to our projects and tasks.
The next logical step was the idea to adopt aspect-oriented programming approach. We evaluated several tools, but the result was far from our expectations. Too complex for a middle level developer and takes too much time to develop even for a senior one. This coincided in time with the release of Roslyn technology, and at a certain moment we had an idea to combine the capabilities of automatic code generation and Roslyn.
In just a couple of weeks, a prototype of the tool was created and this approach seemed more promising. Fast forward several updates of the tool and we can say that our expectations were met and exceeded. We have developed a library of useful templates and we use this approach in most of our projects.
As you may expect, our tool is still not perfect and have some limitations, so I would like to split the article into two parts, the first one is how I see the implementation of this functionality in the perfect world and the second is how it works right now.
Before we dive deep into the details, I would like to make a disclaimer — all examples in this article have been simplified to a level that allows you to show the idea, without being overloaded with irrelevant details.
Also, as you may notice, English is not my native language, so please forgive me for any mistakes.

How it would be done in the perfect world

After several years of using our tool, I have a vision of how I would like this to work in the perfect world scenario.
In my vision, the language specifications allow the use of source code transformations, and there is support of such capabilities for a compiler and IDE.
The idea was inspired by introduction of the «partial» modifier in the C# language specification. This rather simple concept (the ability to define a class, structure or interface in several files) has significantly improved and simplified the support of tools for automatic source code generation. You can view it as a kind of horizontal splitting of the source code of a class between several files.
For those who are not fluent in the C# language, a small example.
Suppose we have a simple form described in the file Example1.aspx
<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="True" %> // . . .  // . . .
A developer implements some custom logic (for example, changing the color of the button to red when it is clicked) in the Example1.aspx.cs file
public partial class ExamplePage1 : System.Web.UI.Page, IMyInterface { protected void btnSubmit_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) { btnSubmit.Color = Color.Red; } }
The «partial» capabilities allows a tool (for example Visual Studio) to parse the Example1.aspx file and automatically generate the Example1.aspx.designer.cs file.
public partial class ExamplePage1 : System.Web.UI.Page { protected global::System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button btnSubmit; }
In other words, we have the ability to store a part of the code for the ExamplePage1 class in one file (Example1.aspx.cs) that is updated by a programmer and another part of the class in the Example1.aspx.designer.cs file, that is updated by an automatically generated tool.
In the end, for a compiler, it looks like as one class, combined from two parts
public class ExamplePage1 : System.Web.UI.Page, IMyInterface { protected global::System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button btnSubmit; protected void btnSubmit_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) { btnSubmit.Color = Color.Red; } }
As you might notice, in the example with the definition of inheritance of the IMyInterface interface, the final result is a combination of class definitions from different «partial» sections from the different files.
If the language lacks «partial» functionality and the compiler demands storing all the class code in only one file, then we can assume inconvenience and additional hurdles have to overcome for auto-generation of the code.
My idea is to include two additional modifiers in the language specification that will make it easier to embed aspects into the source code.
The first modifier is «original» keyword and we add it to the definition of the class that should be able to be transformed.
The second one is «processed» keyword, and it symbolizes that this is the final class definition that is result of the source code transformation tool and which must be accepted by the compiler to generate the bytecode.
The process sequence is something like this:
  1. An user works with the source code of a class that contains the «original» modifier in the .cs file (for example Example1.cs)
  2. When compiling, the compiler checks the correctness of the source code, and if the class is successfully compiled, it checks for the presence of the «original» modifier
  3. If «original» modifier is present, then the compiler transfer the source code to a transformation process (which is a black box for the compiler)
  4. The transformation process, based on a set of rules, modifies the source code and, upon successful completion of the process, creates .processed.cs file and .processed.cs.map files (.processed.cs.map needed to match the code between the .cs files and the .processed.cs file, to help with debugging and to display differences between the files in IDE)
  5. The compiler reads the code from the .processed.cs file (in our example it is Example1.processed.cs) and compiles it
  6. If the code in the file has been successfully compiled, then it is checked thata. Classes that had the «original» modifier have the «processed» modifierb. The signature of these classes is identical in both the .cs file and the .processed.cs file
  7. If everything is fine, then the byte code produced during compilation of the .processed.cs file is accepted for final byte code generation.
By adding these two modifiers, we were able to introduce support for source code transformation tools at the language level, the same way as «partial» modifier made it possible to simplify support for source code generation.
As I see it, implementation of support of «original»/«processed» feature in the compiler is a week of work for two interns at Microsoft (a joke of course, but only partially). There are no any fundamental difficulties in implementation of the support. From the point of view of the compiler, it is file manipulation and process invocation.
In .NET 5, a new feature was announced — source code generators, which allows you to generate new source code files during compilation process and this is a movement in the right direction. Unfortunately, it only allows you to generate new source code, but not modify the existing one. So Some work still needs to be done.
Here is an example of such process, as I envision it. An user creates file Example2.cs
public original class ExamplePage2 : System.Web.UI.Page, IMyInterface { protected global::System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button btnSubmit; protected void btnSubmit_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) { btnSubmit.Color = Color.Red; } }
Starts the compilation process, if it completes successfully and the compiler finds the «original» modifier, then it gives the source code to the transformation process, which generates the Example2.processed.cs file (in the simplest case, it can be just an exact copy of Example2.cs with «original» replaced by «processed»).
In our case, lets assume that the transformation process has added an advice for a logging aspect and the result looks like this:
public processed class ExamplePage2 : System.Web.UI.Page, IMyInterface { protected global::System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button btnSubmit; protected void btnSubmit_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) { try { btnSubmit.Color = Color.Red; } catch(Exception ex) { ErrorLog(ex); throw; } SuccessLog(); } private static processed ErrorLog(Exception ex) { // some error logic here } private static processed SuccessLog([System.Runtime.CompilerServices.CallerMemberName] string memberName = "") { // some success logic here } }
The next step would be to verify the signatures of the «original» vs «processed» classes. The _majority_ of signatures are identical and it satisfies the condition that the definitions in «original» and «processed» versions must be exactly the same.
In this finaly «processed» code, I included an example of one more proposal, this is the «processed» modifier for methods, properties and fields.
For methods, properties, and fields the «processed» modifier identifies them as available only to classes with the «processed» modifier and which are ignored when comparing signatures. This is done for the convenience of aspect logic developers and allows them to move the common logic into separate methods so as not to create unnecessary code redundancy.
The compiler verifies this code and if everything is ok, then takes created bytecode to continue the build process.
It is clear that in this example there is some simplification and in reality the logic may be more complicated (for example, when we include both «original» and «partial» modifires into the same class).

The perfect world's IDE functionality to support source code transformations

Main requirement for IDE to support of source code transformations is correct navigation between the «original»/«processed» classes and support of step-by-step debugging.
The second feature of the IDE that I would like to have is to help in reading the code of processed classes. A «processed» class can contain many pieces of code that have been added by several adivces to the same method/property.
Implementation of displaying such code that is similar to the concept of layers in a graphics editor seems to me as the most convenient option to achieve this goal. Our current plugin implements something similar and the response from its users is quite positive.
Another feature that would help introduce AOP into everyday life is the refactoring functionality. An user, selects a part of the code, and could choose «Extract To AOP Template» option and the IDE creates the necessary template files, scaffolds the initial code and after analyzing the project code, suggests candidates for using the template from other classes.
And the icing on the cake would be support in writing aspect templates, for example, interactively applying an advice to a class / method of your choice so that you can evaluate the results of tranfromation on the fly, without an explicit compilation cycle.
I am sure that if the creators of the Resharper plugin applies their magic, the result is guaranteed.

Creating aspect source code in the perfect world

To paraphrase the TRIZ, the ideal creating of source code for the implementation of aspects logic is the absence of creating of additional code that needed only to support the instrumentation processes.
In the perfect world scenario, we would like to write source code for the aspect advices, without the effort of writing helper logic to achieve that goal. And this source code would be an integral part of the project.
The second desire is the ability to have interactive plug & play, i.e. after we have created a template, we would not need to take additional steps in order for it to be used for transformation. There would be no need to recompile the tool or configure post-compilation options for the project.
After a template was created and a developer writes a couple of lines of code, he/she would immediately see the result and if the template contains errors, their detection and debugging of the errors would be integrated into the process of applying the template, and would not be a separate part that requires additional effort from the developer.
Plus, it would be really good that the syntax of the template language would be as close as possible to the syntax of the C # language, ideally just a minor difference, a few keywords and placeholders.

Our implementation

Our current approach is to create two copies of the project. The first one is for the original source code (the one developers work with) and the second one is the transformed version of the source code, which is used for compilation, debugging, testing and execution.
The scenario is something like this
  • The programmer works with the original version of the source code, implements the logic, compiles the project to detect compile-time errors, etc.
  • When he/she is satisfied with the result and ready to start testing, the command line script is launched, which starts the file transformation process and starts the build process (of course, if the transformation is successful).
  • After the build is complete, depending on the type of project, either a browser is launched that opens a test website for a web project, or a desktop program, if it is a WPF project, or autotests, etc.
For debugging, the second copy (transformed one) of the project is opened in an IDE and a developer continues with it.
The process requires a certain discipline, but after some time it has become a habit, and in certain cases this approach has some advantages (for example, a build could be launched and deployed to a remote server, instead of working with a local computer). Plus, our custom plugin for VisualStudio makes the process easier.

IDE

We use a plugin that is custom tailored for our specific needs and processes and support for the transformation of source code is a fairly small part of its capabilities.
For example, the functionality for displaying code in layers (in a style similar to a graphical editor), allows to hide/show comment layers, by method/properties visiblity (for example, so that only public methods are visible), regions. We surround some of the transformed source code by comments in a special format, and they can also be hidden as a separate layer.
Another possibility is to show a diff between the original and the transformed file. The IDE already knows the relative location of the copy of the files in the project, so it can display the differences between the original and transformed files.
Also, the plugin warns when trying to make changes to the transformed copy (so as not to lose them during subsequent re-transformation). We even published the feature as a free and open sourced plugin for VisualSource Code.

Configuration of pointcuts

A separate topic is configuation of pointcuts for transformation rules, i.e. to which classes and methods we will apply the transformation.
For such purposes we use several levels.
The first level is the top-level configuration file. We can set rules depending on the path on the file system, patterns in the name of files, classes or methods and scopes of classes, methods or properties.
The second level is an indication of the application of transformation rules at the level of attributes of classes, methods or fields in source code of original copy.
The third at the level of the code block and the fourth is an explicit indication to include the results of the transformation of the template in a specific place in the source code.

Templates

Historically, for the purposes of automatic generation, we use templates in the T4 format, so it was quite logical to use the same approach as templates for transformation. T4 templates include the ability to execute arbitrary C# code and have minimal overhead.
For those who have never worked with T4, the simplest analogue would be to present the ASPX or Razor formats, which instead of HTML generates source code in C # and is executed not on IIS, but as a separate tool with outputting the result to the console (or to a file).

Talk is cheap. Show me the code.

To understand how this works for us in real life, the simplest way would be to demonstrate the code before and after the transformation and the source code of the templates that is used during the transformation. I'll demonstrate the simplest options, but the potential of this approach is only limited by your imagination.

An example source code
The example source code after transformation is applied

Step-by-step explanation and template code

AutoComment template
// ##aspect=AutoComment
While processing the source code, if the tool finds a comment in a special format, then it executes the specified template (in this case, it is AutoComment) and insert the transformation result in place of this comment. In this example, it makes sense to automatically insert a special disclaimer that will warn the developer that the code in this file is the result of transformation and it makes no sense to modify this file directly.
AutoComment.t4 template source code
<#@ include file="AopCsharp.ttinclude" #> //------------------------------------------------------------------------------ //  // This code was generated from a template. // // Manual changes to this file may cause unexpected behavior in your application. // Manual changes to this file will be overwritten if the code is regenerated. // // Generated base on file: <#= FileName #> // ##sha256: <#= FileSha256 #> // Created By: <#= User #> // Created Machine: <#= MachineName #> // Created At: <#= Now #> // //  //------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The variables FileName, FileSha256, User, MachineName, and Now are exported to the template from the transformation process.
Result of the transformation
//------------------------------------------------------------------------------ // // This code was generated from a template. // // Manual changes to this file may cause unexpected behavior in your application. // Manual changes to this file will be overwritten if the code is regenerated. // // Generated base on file: ConsoleDemo.cs // ##sha256: PV3lHNDftTzVYnzNCZbKvtHCbscT0uIcHGRNJFx20 // Created By: EuGenie // Created Machine: 192.168.0.1 // Created At: 2017-12-09T14:49:26.7173975-05:00 // //
The next transformation is define by a class attribute
[AopTemplate("ClassLevelTemplateForMethods", NameFilter="First")] public virtual Person FirstDemo(string firstName, string lastName, int age) { Console.Out.WriteLine("FirstDemo: 1"); return new Person() { FirstName = firstName, LastName = lastName, Age = age, }; }
This attribute signals that the ClassLevelTemplateForMethods template should be applied to all methods of a class containing the word «First» in the method's name. The NameFilter parameter is a regular expression pattern that is used to determine which methods to include in the transformation.
ClassLevelTemplateForMethods.t4 template source code
<#@ include file="AopCsharp.ttinclude" #> // class level template <#= MethodStart() #><#= MethodBody() #><#= MethodEnd() #>
Result of the transformation
// class level template public virtual Person FirstDemo(string firstName, string lastName, int age) { Console.Out.WriteLine("FirstDemo: 1"); return new Person() { FirstName = firstName, LastName = lastName, Age = age, }; }
The next transformations are defined by method attributes to demonstrate abilities of multiple transformations applied to the same method.
[AopTemplate("LogExceptionMethod")] [AopTemplate("StopWatchMethod")] [AopTemplate("MethodFinallyDemo", AdvicePriority = 100)] public Customer[] SecondDemo(Person[] people) { IEnumerable Customers; Console.Out.WriteLine("SecondDemo: 1"); // ... return Customers.ToArray(); }
LogExceptionMethod.t4 template source code
<#@ include file="AopCsharp.ttinclude" #> <# EnsureUsing("System"); #> <#= MethodStart() #> try { <#= MethodBody() #> } catch(Exception logExpn) { Console.Error.WriteLine($"Exception in <#= MethodName #>\r\n{logExpn.Message}\r\n{logExpn.StackTrace}"); throw; } <#= MethodEnd() #>
StopWatchMethod.t4 template source code
<#@ include file="AopCsharp.ttinclude" #> <# EnsureUsing("System.Diagnostics"); #> <#= MethodStart() #> var stopwatch = Stopwatch.StartNew(); try { <#= MethodBody() #> } finally { stopwatch.Stop(); Console.Out.WriteLine($"Method <#= MethodName #>: {stopwatch.ElapsedMilliseconds}"); } <#= MethodEnd() #>
MethodFinallyDemo.t4 template source code
<#@ include file="AopCsharp.ttinclude" #> <#= MethodStart() #> try { <#= MethodBody() #> } finally { // whatever logic you need to include for a method } <#= MethodEnd() #>
Result of the transformation
public Customer[] SecondDemo(Person[] people) { try { var stopwatch = Stopwatch.StartNew(); try { try { IEnumerable customers; Console.Out.WriteLine("SecondDemo: 1"); // ... return customers.ToArray(); } catch (Exception logExpn) { Console.Error.WriteLine($"Exception in SecondDemo\r\n{logExpn.Message}\r\n{logExpn.StackTrace}"); throw; } } finally { stopwatch.Stop(); Console.Out.WriteLine($"Method SecondDemo: {stopwatch.ElapsedMilliseconds}"); } } finally { // whatever logic you need to include for a method } }
The next example of the transformation is defined by a block bounded by a using statement
using (new AopTemplate("SecondDemoUsing", extraTag: "test extra")) { customers = people.Select(s => new Customer() { FirstName = s.FirstName, LastName = s.LastName, Age = s.Age, }); foreach (var customer in customers) { Console.Out.WriteLine($"SecondDemo: 2 {customer.FirstName} {customer.LastName}"); } }
SecondDemoUsing.t4 template source code
<#@ include file="AopCsharp.ttinclude" #> Console.Out.WriteLine("Extra Tag data: <#= ExtraTag #>"); <#= StatementBody() #>
ExtraTag is a string that is passed as a parameter. This can be useful for templates that can have slightly different behavior depending on the input parameters.
Result of the transformation
{ Console.Out.WriteLine("Extra Tag data: test extra"); customers = people.Select(s => new Customer() { FirstName = s.FirstName, LastName = s.LastName, Age = s.Age, }); foreach (var customer in customers) { Console.Out.WriteLine($"SecondDemo: 2 {customer.FirstName} {customer.LastName}"); } }
The next transformations are defined by class attributes and will be applied on a class and properties levels.
AopTemplate("NotifyPropertyChangedClass", Action = AopTemplaceAction.Classes)] [AopTemplate("NotifyPropertyChanged", Action = AopTemplaceAction.Properties)] public class Person { public int Id { get; set; } // ... }
This is a classic example, which along with the logging example is given in most examples of aspect-oriented programming.
NotifyPropertyChangedClass.t4 template source code that will be applied on a class level
<#@ include file="AopCsharp.ttinclude" #> <# // the class already implements INotifyPropertyChanged, nothing to do here if(ImplementsBaseType(ClassNode, "INotifyPropertyChanged", "System.ComponentModel.INotifyPropertyChanged")) return null; var classNode = AddBaseTypes(ClassNode, "System.ComponentModel.INotifyPropertyChanged"); #> <#= ClassStart(classNode) #> public event System.ComponentModel.PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged; protected void NotifyPropertyChanged([System.Runtime.CompilerServices.CallerMemberName] string propertyName = "") { PropertyChanged?.Invoke(this, new System.ComponentModel.PropertyChangedEventArgs(propertyName)); } <#= ClassBody(classNode) #> <#= ClassEnd(classNode) #>
NotifyPropertyChanged.t4 template source сode that will be applied on properties level
<#@ include file="AopCsharp.ttinclude" #> <# if(!(PropertyHasEmptyGetBlock() && PropertyHasEmptySetBlock())) return null; string privateUnqiueName = GetUniquePrivatePropertyName(ClassNode, PropertyNode.Identifier.ToString()); #> private <#= PropertyNode.Type.ToFullString() #> <#= privateUnqiueName #><#= PropertyNode.Initializer != null ? " = " + PropertyNode.Initializer.ToFullString() : "" #>; <#= PropertyNode.AttributeLists.ToFullString() + PropertyNode.Modifiers.ToFullString() + PropertyNode.Type.ToFullString() + PropertyNode.Identifier.ToFullString() #> { get { return <#= privateUnqiueName #>; } set { if(<#= privateUnqiueName #> != value) { <#= privateUnqiueName #> = value; NotifyPropertyChanged(); } } }
Result of the transformation
public class Person : System.ComponentModel.INotifyPropertyChanged { public event System.ComponentModel.PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged; protected void NotifyPropertyChanged([System.Runtime.CompilerServices.CallerMemberName] string propertyName = "") { PropertyChanged?.Invoke(this, new System.ComponentModel.PropertyChangedEventArgs(propertyName)); } private int _id; public int Id { get { return _id; } set { if (_id != value) { _id = value; NotifyPropertyChanged(); } } } // ... }
The next transformation for caching property results, it is defined by the attribute
[AopTemplate("CacheProperty", extraTag: "{ \"CacheKey\": \"name_of_cache_key\", \"ExpiresInMinutes\": 10 }")] public string FullName { get { return $"{FirstName} {LastName}"; } }
CacheProperty.t4 template source code (it is quite long, but most of the code is an example of using JSON from ExtraTag property as a config setting )
Result of the transformation
public string FullName { get { System.Runtime.Caching.ObjectCache cache = System.Runtime.Caching.MemoryCache.Default; string cachedData = cache["name_of_cache_key"] as string; if (cachedData == null) { cachedData = GetPropertyData(); if (cachedData != null) { cache.Set("name_of_cache_key", cachedData, System.DateTimeOffset.Now.AddMinutes(10)); } } return cachedData; string GetPropertyData() { // FullNameComment FullName return $"{FirstName} {LastName}"; } } }

Non-AOP templates

Although this article focuses on aspect-oriented programming, the source code transformation technique is universal and can be used for tasks that are not directly related to AOP.
For example, it can be used for dependency injection, i.e. we change the resource creation code depending on the build parameters.
The transformation is defined by an attribute
[AopTemplate("DependencyInjection", AdvicePriority = 500, Action = AopTemplateAction.PostProcessingClasses)] public class ConsoleDemo { // ... private static IConfigurationRoot _configuration = inject; private IDataService _service { get; } = inject; // ... public Customer[] SecondDemo(Person[] people) { int configDelayMS = inject; // we are going to inject dependency to local variables string configServerName = inject; } // ... protected static dynamic inject; // ... }
As you see, in the source code the dynamic variable feature is used, which allows them to be assigned to a property/field/variable of any types. For the sake of clarity, we have introduced some kind of quasi keyword.
DependencyInjection.t4 template source code
In the template code we use the comparison of GetGlobalSetting ("env") == "test" and depending on this condition, either new DataService() or new MockDataService() will be injected.
Result of the transformation
public class ConsoleDemo { // ... private static IConfigurationRoot _configuration = new ConfigurationBuilder() .SetBasePath(System.IO.Path.Combine(AppContext.BaseDirectory)) .AddJsonFile("appsettings.json", optional: true) .Build(); private IDataService _service { get; } = new DataService(); // ... public Customer[] SecondDemo(Person[] people) { int configDelayMS = Int32.Parse(_configuration["delay_ms"]); string configServerName = _configuration["server_name"]; } // ... }
Also, the tool might be used as a «poor man» static analysis (but it is much, much better to implement analyzers using the native functionality of Roslyn). We analyze the code for our rules and insert #erro#warning directives into the source code when we want to raise an error or warning.
The transformation is defined by
[AopTemplate("StaticAnalyzer", Action = AopTemplateAction.Classes)] public class ConsoleDemo { // .. IEnumerable Customers; // .. Console.Out.WriteLine(i18(String.Format("SecondDemo: {0}", "Step 3"))); // .. }
StaticAnalyzer.t4 template source code
Result of the transformation
public class ConsoleDemo { // .. #error variable "Customers" doesn't match code standard rules IEnumerable Customers; // .. #warning Please replace String.Format with string interpolation format Console.Out.WriteLine(i18(String.Format("SecondDemo: {0}", "Step 3"))); // .. }
Another way to use the tool for purposes localizing an application, i.e. find all the strings in the classes and replace them with the use of the appropriate resources.
The transformation is defined by
[AopTemplate("ResourceReplacer", AdvicePriority = 1000, ExtraTag = "ResourceFile=Demo.resx,ResourceClass=Demo", Action = AopTemplateAction.PostProcessingClasses)] public class ConsoleDemo { // .. Console.Out.WriteLine(i18("SecondDemo: i18")); // ... Console.Out.WriteLine(i18($"First Name {customer.FirstName} Last Name {customer.LastName}")); Console.Out.WriteLine("SecondDemo: 2 " + i18("First Name ") + customer.FirstName + i18(" Last Name ") + customer.LastName); // ... Console.Out.WriteLine(i18(String.Format("SecondDemo: {0}", "Step 3"))); // ... protected static string i18(string s) => s; }
ResourceReplacer.t4 template source code
In the example, we have a resource file Demo.resx, that have created the following lines
 First Name {0} Last Name {1} First Name Last Name
And VisualStudio generated C# class for us from content of Demo.resx
Result of the transformation
public class ConsoleDemo { // .. #error Cannot find resource for a string "SecondDemo: i18", please add it to resources Console.Out.WriteLine(i18("SecondDemo: i18")); // ... Console.Out.WriteLine(String.Format(Demo.First_Last_Names_Formatted, customer.FirstName, customer.LastName)); Console.Out.WriteLine("SecondDemo: 2 " + (Demo.First_Name + " ") + customer.FirstName + (" " + Demo.Last_Name + " ") + customer.LastName); // ... #error Argument for i18 method must be either string literal or interpolated string, but instead got Microsoft.CodeAnalysis.CSharp.Syntax.InvocationExpressionSyntax Console.Out.WriteLine(i18(String.Format("SecondDemo: {0}", "Step 3"))); // ... }
Please note that the interpolated string was replaced with String.Format and the «First Name {0} Last Name {1}» resource was used. For lines that do not exist in the resource file or do not match our format, an error message is added.

Conclusion

The tool gives you a very powerful and at the same time quite simple way to introduce Aspect-Oriented Programming into your projects.
You can give it a try for a whole project, a folder or even just one file, to evaluate how it goes.
In addition, the transformation tool allows you to work not only with C# files, but also with any file type (of course, with certain limitations). If you have a parser that can build an AST for your language, then you can replace Roslyn with this parser, tweak the implementation of the code handler and it will work. Unfortunately, the number of libraries with functionality close to Roslyn is very limited and their use requires much more effort. In addition to C#, we use transforms for JavaScript and TypeScript projects, but certainly not as comprehensively as for C#. And using T4 which is based on C# and to produce output in a different language is not optimal as well.
Just a reminder, the code of the examples and templates are provided as an illustration of the possibilities of such an approach and in real life, as they say, sky is the limit.
Our original tool is developed for the .Net Framework, but we started work on a simplified open source version named Aspectimum, under the MIT license for .Net Core. At the moment, the result is fully functional and 90% ready, there are need for minor improvements, refactor of the code, the creation of documentation and examples, but without all this, barrier to entry will be quite high and DX might be negative.

2020.10.01 20:32 seventhblankpage Some cats can sense when a person is dying, but my cat can sense something much, much worse...

I was not a cat person before Guinevere. Like, really not a cat person. I’ve always been Team Dog, hands-down, ten times out of ten. Honestly, I’m still not exactly a cat person. A cat owner, yes (and a reluctant one at that), but not a cat person. Guinevere being the one exception, of course.
I could wax poetic about the nuances of my distaste for felines, but I’ll spare you the monotony. The abbreviated version is that frankly, I’ve always found cats to be prissy and stuck up. Owning one would be like having a person the size of a loaf of bread shedding and tracking litter all over my house, judging me all the while. I just don’t see the appeal. Before the cat people eviscerate me, yes I know that dogs also shed and are a lot more work, to which I say: at least they don’t make a hobby of sharpening their claws on your legs. Checkmate.
All this to say, I had no intention of getting a cat (or any pet for that matter) when I headed to the animal shelter on a windy Tuesday morning last month. Hell, I wasn't even going to look at the animals. Heather, my best friend from college, had started her new job at the local shelter just a few days prior. She’d been volunteering there for ages and the shelter liked her so much that they decided to bring her on as manager. It isn’t easy work and the pay is shit (and, you know, there are the cats), but Heather – animal lover extraordinaire – was over the moon and jumped at the offer. That Tuesday – her second day on the job – was also her birthday, so I decided to bring her lunch. I had the day off, anyway.
I slept in that morning and ended up leaving for the shelter around 11:00, stopping by Heather’s favorite Mexican restaurant on the way. I remember being vaguely surprised that the shelter parking lot only had one car in it (a falling-apart Prius which I immediately recognized as Heather’s), but then again, who's going to an animal shelter at noon on a Tuesday? Other than me, that is… Sure enough, Heather was the only person there – working or otherwise – and she was on a phone call looking exceptionally frazzled when I walked in.
When she saw me, a huge smile spread across her face. I mouthed “happy birthday” to her, holding up the paper bag with a grin.
Heather’s smile grew wider, and then her expression turned apologetic.
“Sorry” she whispered, covering the phone’s receiver with her hand, “I’ll be done in a sec. You can look around if you want!”
Heather nodded towards a set of double doors – the kind you find in hospitals – and I acquiesced, making my way down a cinder block hallway towards what I assumed would be the animal rooms. Fluorescent lights cast the hallway in a sterile glow and the air was just a little bit too cold for comfort.
Why do animal shelters always feel like prisons? I wondered absently, though I couldn’t remember the last time I had been in a shelter, and I’d never so much as set foot in a prison.
I heard them before I saw them. The pathetic mewling of dozens of cats assaulted my ears, like nails on a chalkboard but arguably worse. The meowing intensified as I rounded the corner to the cages themselves. The smell of ammonia and wet cat food nearly made me gag; the odor combined with the sound almost sent me running.
I scanned the cages and the small fuzzy bodies within them. It was weird, but there didn’t seem to be any dogs at the shelter... I did a quick once-over of the hallway, looking for another room. This one seemed to be it. What kind of shelter doesn’t have dogs?
Maybe they’ve all been adopted, I thought to myself, smirking, after all, who’d want to adopt a cat?
I didn’t see Guinevere escape from her cage. I’m not even sure she had been in a cage at all. I did, however, almost punt her across the room when she came up behind me and rubbed on my leg, an unexpected black shadow that nearly made me jump out of my skin. If my sudden, violent movements startled the cat, she didn’t show it. To my great surprise, she started threading herself between my legs like a furry snake, making a bizarre rumbling noise as she did so. It took me a moment to realize she was purring.
I looked down at the serpentine feline winding a lemniscate around my legs and – to this day I do not know what possessed me – I reached down to scratch her behind the ears.
The cat let out a small, pleased chirping noise and blinked up at me with perfectly round green eyes that seemed too big for her face. She was tiny – smaller than most of the other cats, though she didn’t look like a kitten – which made her eyes look comically large by comparison. I guess it was kind of cute, in an extraterrestrial sort of way.
The wide-eyed cat walked with me as I made my rounds of the shelter, searching unsuccessfully for a dog. She leaned against my leg and purred every time I stopped, pushing her wet little nose against my shin. I smiled despite myself.
After a few minutes I heard an exasperated sigh and the click of a phone receiver, followed by the sound of footsteps walking towards me.
“Happy birthday!” I said, embracing Heather as she rounded the corner to join me, “tough customer?”
“My boss,” my friend replied, looking sheepish, “the system went down this morning and I couldn’t figure out how to get it back up… I’m the only one working today and they don’t teach you all that stuff when you’re a volunteer...”
“Well, hopefully lunch will make you feel a little better.” I brandished the bag at Heather, who took it with a beatific grin.
Heather’s smile slipped when she spotted the cat by my feet, a curious expression spreading across her face. “Looks like you’ve got yourself a little shadow.”
“Oh, yeah,” I said, looking down, “I don’t know why it likes me so much.”
She,” Heather corrected gently, “her name is Guinevere.”
“Well I don’t know why she likes me so much. And Guinevere’s a stupid name for a cat.”
“I didn’t name her,” Heather shrugged, frowning slightly. The silence hung heavily between us, and Heather didn’t take her eyes from the cat.
“What is it?” I asked.
“Oh, nothing. Just, be careful with that one.”
“Huh? She seems okay.” As if on cue, Guinevere chirped up at as,. It was – though it pains me to admit this – adorable.
“Yeah, I thought so too,” Heather sighed, squatting down to give Guinevere a pat. “She seems like such a sweet thing but apparently she’s been adopted like four or five times and always gets brought back. I dunno...”
I looked at Guinevere, wondering if her good kitty persona was an act, a ruse to entice unsuspecting humans to adopt her, after which she would revert to being a menace, as all cats are. “Why?”
Heather shrugged again. “People give all kinds of excuses for surrendering a pet. Who knows what’s true? Usually they decide that having a pet’s too much trouble, or that they don’t like scooping litter, or that they just can’t bear their designer furniture getting all scratched up… That sort of thing.”
“Five times seems like a lot, though. And she’s not that old… right?”
“Vet said she’s at least three.” Heather paused for a moment, looking pensive. A conspiratorial smile spread across her face. “There’s another possible explanation, though.”
“Go on.”
“Legend has it,” Heather continued, moving closer to me and dropping her voice to a melodramatic whisper, “that all of Guinevere’s former owners had one thing in common.”
“What’s that?”
“Shortly after adopting her, every single one of them died. Every. Single. One.”
I’m not a superstitious person, but in that that moment I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
“You’ve heard that cats can predict death, right?” Heather continued, her eyes narrowing. “In nursing homes, a cat will climb on an elderly person’s bed and refuse to move. Twenty-four hours later that person will be dead. They know. The cats know.“ She looked at Guinevere, who was now sitting on my foot. “And when a cat finds someone who’s close to death, they stay close to them. They won’t budge from their side until the person is gone, even if the person’s a total stranger. Even if they’ve never met them before.” Heather paused, eyes glued to the cat at my feet. “Kind of like Guinevere’s doing right now.”
“You’re not serious, you don’t believe those stories,” I scoffed.
“Of course I believe them,” Heather shot back, her suddenly angry eyes flashing to mine, “the stories are true. There are hundreds of recorded cases. Thousands.”
I don’t know if it was the look in Heather’s eyes or the deadly seriousness in her voice, but something about my friend’s words made my stomach twist itself into a knot. “So what you’re saying,” I started slowly, unable to keep the tremor out of my voice, “is that I’m… what? That I’m... going to die?”
Heather’s face darkened, and then she burst out laughing.
“No!” she shrieked with laughter, “No, god no, of course not. I’m so sorry – HA! Guinevere’s just clingy but, but you should’ve seen your face… your expression – priceless!”
The tightness in my abdomen uncoiled, and I exhaled, not realizing I’d been holding my breath.
“She just likes you, dumbass…” Heather giggled, wiping a tear from her eye, “god that was funny. Sorry,” she smiled at me bashfully, “but you know, the sensing death thing, that’s true.”
“Bullshit.”
“No, really,” she continued, grabbing a bin of cat food and beginning to dump a scoopful of kibble into each of the tiny little bowls. “Just not for the reason you think. Cats don’t have a psychic sixth sense or anything, just a really good sense of smell.”
The confused expression on my face sent Heather into another fit of self-satisfied giggles.
“We smell different, when we’re sick, when we’re dying,” Heather gestured at me with the food scoop. “Humans don’t have good enough noses to tell the difference but cats–” she smiled affectionately at a grumpy looking kitten the size of a softball, “cats are sensitive. They can tell.”
“Okay, that’s weird, I guess. But what’s the deal with her dead owners, then?”
“Just really rotten luck,” Heather stroked Guinevere from head to tail, “they were all old, I checked – the adopter’s birth date is always on our paperwork. It’s sad when an owner dies of course, but it isn’t as uncommon as you’d think. A lot of elderly people adopt, cats are good for loneliness. But if the owner passes away and no family members will take the pet, they get brought back. Guinevere hasn’t had a whole lot of luck with that.”
“Well, black cats are unlucky, right?”
Heather brandished the cat food scoop at me with a look of mock outrage. “She,” she said, pointing lovingly at Guinevere, “is actually brown.”
“Well, in that case, I’m fine,” I joked, “besides, it’s not like I’m adopting her.”
I signed Guinevere’s adoption papers two hours later. I don’t know what possessed me. I really don’t. But somehow, I couldn’t bear to leave Guinevere to be adopted by another person who would end up leaving her. I’m a sucker for a sad story, evidently. Or maybe I just wanted to be a hero, the one to break the curse. And Guinevere really seemed to love me… maybe I’m just a sucker for flattery. That’s probably it.
The only thing more surprising than the adoption itself was that I actually ended up liking Guinevere, like, immediately. I found myself thinking of her during the day while I was at work, wondering what she was up to and feeling eager to get home and play with her. The affection aspect probably helped, too: Guinevere really was clingy. She was by my side, constantly, the kind of neediness you’d expect from a dog more than a cat. That thought always made me chuckle; of course I would adopt the most dog-like cat on the planet.
Guinevere was smart too, really smart. Smarter than any cat I’d ever met. And well-behaved, to the point of it being a little shocking. I had bought a little spray bottle for training purposes (apparently you spritz cats with water when they’re being naughty?) and I haven’t had to use it even once. There wasn’t even a learning curve with her litter box – she’s literally never had an accident.
There was only one incident that’s blemished Guinevere’s perfect pet record. A couple weekends ago I was carrying groceries in from my car and I left the front door open. I didn’t think anything of it; Guinevere had never shown any interest in going outside before. But she must have been in some sort of mood that day, because she sprinted through the open door with a speed I’d never seen before. And she was headed straight for the street.
Swearing, I let the grocery bags fall from my arms and scrambled after her. My street wasn’t a particularly busy one, but still – Guinevere was so small, a driver could easily miss her… the mere thought of it made me nauseous.
Guinevere made a beeline for a parked car across the road, yowling like she was being chased. Or like she was attacking – I can’t say I know the difference.
With me close on her heels, Guinevere pulled up short before the car, hissing – another thing I’d never seen her do before. I tried to grab her, but if you’ve ever tried to catch a cat, you know: there are few things harder than catching a cat that doesn’t want to be caught.
Guinevere skittered away from me, her teeth bared, her fur sticking straight up, her claws fully protruded. After several tense minutes I was able to grab her. She thrashed as I did so, striking out with her paw and scratching the car.
Shit shit shit. Guinevere’s claw had taken a long strip of dark gray paint off of one of the car’s rear doors. Just my freaking luck.
I kept a death grip on Guinevere as I sprinted for the front door, dodging her irate swipes and nearly tripping over the spilled groceries as I did so. Miraculously, I made it inside without her escaping from my arms, and I dropped her unceremoniously in the bathroom, slamming the door shut and feeling only marginally guilty about it.
Damn cat.
With a sigh, I went back outside. I needed to take down the car’s license plate number, leave a note with my insurance information…. I’d been on the receiving end of hit-and-run car damage, and I wasn’t about to be that asshole. Besides, it was broad daylight – any one of my neighbors could have seen the ordeal. I stepped over the grocery bags I’d dropped on the stoop. One of them had tipped over, and a few apples had rolled down the steps. I cursed under my breath. They were probably too bruised to eat now, though maybe I could use them for a pie…
One apple had rolled almost all the way to the street, and as I squatted down to get it, I realized that the car Guinevere had attacked was gone. Odd: I hadn’t seen anyone in the car. But then again, I hadn’t looked. They must have gotten in and left while I was wrangling Guinevere into the bathroom. But I’d only been gone for a minute…
Feeling a little guilty about the damaged car, I headed back inside to release Guinevere from her bathroom prison. She was obviously not happy with me, but she had at least calmed down.
Like I said, that was really the only incident. Guinevere was a model pet, and even proved useful. She seemed to be keenly aware of what was going on in my house at all times. Like this one time I forgot to set a timer for a pizza I’d put in the oven and went to watch TV in the other room (rookie mistake I know). Guinevere sat at my feet hollering her head off until I followed her into the kitchen to save the pizza. And get this, there hadn’t even been any smoke – she let me know before the pizza burned.
Another time she woke me up in the middle of the night by sitting on my chest and batting my nose with her paw. I was annoyed at first, until she jumped down and sauntered over to the window. It was a few inches open, and powdery white snow was quickly accumulating on it. A few more minutes and the snow would have spilled over and ruined my wallpaper. That was kind of strange though, too: I couldn’t recall opening my window. Actually, I was sure that I hadn’t. I never opened them in the winter (way too cold for that) and what’s more, I always kept them latched.
Guinevere seemed to take a special interest in windows after that. She spent a lot of time sitting on the sill (which I guess is a cat thing?), sometimes even choosing the window over my lap. She never dozed in the sun like a normal cat, though, she was always vigilant, staring at the cars as they drove by. Once again, acting more like a dog than a cat. She really was unusual; sometimes she felt more like a human than a cat, too. It was her eyes, I think. Her expressions were so familiar and person-like… it was uncanny. I started to feel like I could tell what mood she was in and what she was thinking by her eyes alone. I wonder if she could do the same with me.
About a week after the snowy window incident, Heather came over unannounced. At the time I found it odd; nobody really just “drops by” without checking first in this day and age, especially since it’s so easy to text.
But Heather didn’t text, or call. She just knocked loudly on my door one Saturday afternoon, startling me. I opened the door, strategically keeping my foot out to block Guinevere just in case she decided to make a run for it again.
Heather looked awful, like she’d partied too hard without sleeping for several consecutive days. Heather wasn’t the party-going type, but then again, I wasn't the cat type so anything was possible.
“Heather, uh, what’s up?”
“Can I come in?”
“Well hello to you, too.”
“Please, it's cold.”
I realized Heather wasn’t wearing a jacket or boots, despite the snow-covered ground. I stepped aside and let my friend walk in. I hadn’t even shut the door before she started to speak.
“Guinevere can’t sense when people are dying.”
I blinked at Heather.
“She can’t. Everything I told you. That wasn’t right, that wasn’t it.”
“Well if she can’t sense death,” I said, sarcastically, rolling my eyes in an exaggerated motion, “what is the point of having a cat?”
“You’re not hearing me,” Heather said, her face ashen. “You remember how I said all of her previous owners were old?”
I nodded silently.
“They weren’t.”
“Uh, what?”
“We weren’t the first shelter to have her.”
“Okay…? And?”
Heather pulled something out of the pocket of her jeans: a piece of notebook paper, tightly folded, the ink bleeding ever so slightly. “I got a call,” she began, her hands trembling almost imperceptibly, “from a woman who runs a shelter the next town over. In Darien.”
I raised one eyebrow, waiting.
Heather’s hands shook harder as she tried to unfold the paper. “Guinevere had gone through multiple owners there, too.”
“How many?”
“Seven,” Heather replied, her voice barely above a whisper. And not one of them, not a single one of them was old. Not a single one was sick.”
“Okay? I don’t understand where you’re going with this.”
“Every single one of those owners died, too.” Heather thrust the paper at me, and I saw it was a list of names. “They weren’t old, or even sick. But they died. They’re all there. You can look them up.”
“If you’re trying to scare me again, this is really not funny. I’m not gonna fall for it.”
Heather’s mouth opened and closed a few times, and I realized she was trying to catch her breath. When she spoke at last it sounded as though she was choking on her words.
“Guinevere can’t tell when people are sick and dying. She can tell when they’re going to die.”
“That’s the same thing.”
“No, it’s not,” Heather spat, in a voice laced with venom. “Guinevere,” she began, turning her fearful eyes to the cat who was blinking innocently up at us, “can tell when people are going to be killed.”
This time, it was my turn to burst out laughing.”Nice try, Heather. Good god, you go far for a joke.”
“I know it sounds impossible–,” Heather began in a pleading voice.
“More than impossible, insane.”
“–but they were murdered, all of them. I swear. Every single one of them was murdered. Look their names up, take it, take it.” She shoved the paper at me but I stepped away, still laughing.
“If,” I began, trying to regain my composure enough to play along with the joke, “and this is a big if, IF what you say is true, why on earth would Guinevere choose to get adopted by people who are going to get killed? That’s a terrible idea!”
“I don’t know!” Heather wailed, desperation coloring her voice, “the woman from Darien thinks… thinks Guinevere was trying to, to warn her owners. To warn them, or, or to stop it from happening.”
I blinked at Heather, suppressed laughter straining at my throat. “You really believe this shit, don’t you?”
Heather nodded, her lower lip trembling.
“Well Heather, this proves it. I guess black cats really are bad luck.”
“She’s brown.” Heather’s voice was a scathing whisper, but her eyes were swimming with unspilled tears.
I laughed. I couldn’t help it. Was I being a bad friend? Maybe. Probably. But the whole situation was just so fucking ridiculous.
Heather looked so crestfallen that I actually did feel bad for a second. But not bad enough to take the list she was still holding out to me. A long moment passed.
“Fine,” Heather seethed, letting the paper fall to the floor. “It’s your fucking funeral.”
With that, my best friend strode to the front door, slamming it behind her. A moment later her car pulled out of the driveway, leaving Guinevere and I alone.
At least, I thought we were alone.
I went about my day, letting the list of names remain on the floor where Heather had dropped it. I didn’t believe her, obviously, but something kept me from throwing the paper out. Her words swam around in the back of my mind and kept me company, and then something weird started to happen.
Let me just preface by saying, I’m not a paranoid person. Not at all. There’s even a name for what I was experiencing. It’s called the Baader-Meinhof illusion, the frequency illusion. You hear about something new and then start seeing or hearing it everywhere. Like when you learn a new word or hear a catchy song for the first time.
That was what was happening to me. Or at least that’s what I told myself when I started getting creeped out by things that shouldn’t have bothered me. By living alone, by noises in the darkness, by the flash of car lights on the ceiling as I lay in bed... At least once per night I’d get up to double-check every lock in the house. Before long I was triple-checking. Then quadruple-checking.
But I always felt better in the mornings, so it was easy to convince myself that I too was being ridiculous.
Last week, Guinevere tried to escape again as I was leaving for work. I caught her in the nick of time with my foot and gently pushed her far enough into the house that I could close the door.
Stupid cat. I thought, digging in my pocket for my keys. As I walked to the driveway, I glanced across the street and was hit with a surge of déjà vu. A dark grey car was parked on the far side of the road, a car that looked familiar. Curious, I took a few steps toward it, and saw what I was looking for: a long, thin line scratched down one of the rear passenger doors: Guinevere’s handiwork.
I walked over to the car, determined to get the license plate number and reimburse the owner for the damage. But I was thwarted once again. The car didn’t have license plates. Bizarre, I thought, glancing at the car’s heavily tinted windows and wondering who it belonged to. A family member of one of the neighbors, maybe. Probably a politician or minor celebrity or something – someone who didn’t want people peeking in. I made a mental note to leave a note on the dashboard when I came home from work, but upon my return, the car – once again – was gone.
Later that night, I watched a scary movie alone – a dumb thing to do, really, especially given my newfound paranoia. I knew it was stupid but – call me a masochist – I did it anyway.
I was sufficiently anxious after the movie ended (surprise, surprise), and had even more trouble than usual falling asleep. After my fifth round of checking the locks, I finally began to relax – until the lights of a car outside flashed across the darkness of my ceiling. Flashed, and then stayed on.
I held my breath, waiting for them to pass. They didn’t. I counted to ten, and then the lights shut off. My heart hammering within my chest, I crept downstairs. I drew back the curtain and squinted out into the darkness. Without any streetlights, I couldn’t see a damn thing. Swallowing heavily, I flicked on my porch lights. The bulbs gave them the effect of floodlights (they were really far too bright, I just hadn’t gotten around to getting them changed), and their luminosity lit up the entire street in front of my house.
There was a grey car parked outside, parked on my side of the street this time. I squinted, trying to see if the windows were tinted, but the glare reflecting off of them was too bright to tell. The car’s own lights were off and remained off for the full five minutes I stood there. Surely, it had been there the whole time. I was just being ridiculous because I’d been spooked by the movie. That was it. At last satisfied (or close to it) I shut off the blinding lights. In the afterglow of the fading bulbs, I saw what appeared to be a scratch on the rear door.
Definitely a friend of the neighbor’s… probably more than a friend if their car is still here this late. My heart beating a little more slowly, I made my way back upstairs, snagging a bottle of wine as I did so. I was not above letting a little Malbec help me to sleep. And it did help, soothing my nerves and letting me drift off easily.
The car was still parked outside my house in the morning, but all things are less frightening in the daylight, so I quickly forgot about it.
It was Saturday, and I decided to capitalize on being up early to get some cleaning out of the way. I started in the living room (it always takes the most time to clean so I prefer to get it done first), and was wiping down my coffee table when I saw a piece of paper poking out from between two books.
It was the list Heather brought over two weeks prior. I’d forgotten about it. Heather hadn’t spoken to me since, and I was in no rush to reach out first. I knew she’d come around, she always did.
I chuckled as I looked at the paper. What a stupid prank. I must have been subconsciously looking for an excuse to procrastinate from cleaning, because I brought the paper over to my desk and sat down in front of my computer, almost without thinking.
I typed the first name into the search engine. John Ergeld. The first link that popped up was an obituary. I didn’t bother clicking it, and went straight to the next name: Eliza Marsh. Another obituary. I couldn’t help being a little bit impressed with Heather. She’d certainly done her homework to make this believable. When I typed in the third name, no obituary popped up. Whoops. I was already prepared to gloat to Heather when I realized that no obits had popped up because they were buried beneath news headlines: “SMALL-TOWN SCHOOL TEACHER MURDERED BY VENGEFUL FORMER STUDENT.”
I clicked on the link. I wish I hadn’t. Because there was a picture of the woman who had been killed, an older woman with a kind smile. She was sitting on a flowery couch in what I assumed was her home. In her lap was a dark cat with extremely large eyes.
I should have walked away from the computer, but I couldn’t. I typed in name after name, even going back to re-check the first two. I began to feel sick to my stomach as I learned, one by one, that each and every one of them had been murdered.
The last name on the list was “Grace Allen,” a recent college graduate who had died in a house fire. In a house fire. I know it’s sickening to be elated upon learning of a person’s death, but Grace was killed by a house fire – an accident, one that happens all the time.
I skimmed the article detailing her death, relief flooding through me.
The relief was short-lived, however, because the very last line of the article stated that the cause of the fire was arson.
My paranoia tripled. Sleeping became even harder, and I’d find myself pacing the hallways late into the night, or trying to distract myself with mindless TV shows. I couldn’t shake my anxiety. Guinevere seemed to notice my distress; she stayed even closer to me, looking at me with her wide eyes full of concern, an expression that was unsettlingly human. She was a comfort for me, but I found myself wishing that she was a dog. A guard dog, and a big, loud, scary one at that.
Through it all, the grey car remained in front of my house. I should have been comforted by this – surely its presence meant that it was just an ordinary car. If it was something more sinister, its owner wouldn’t have left it sitting out in broad daylight for all to see. Right?
I couldn’t shake my irrational fear of it. I couldn’t get past the fact that it had no license plates. And if it were really a car belonging to the person who was visiting the house across the street, why wouldn’t they have parked in the empty spot in front of that house, instead of mine?
Over the next few days, I worked from home so I could keep my eye on the car. I checked on it often. It was always there, in the exact same spot. I never saw anyone getting in or out. Still, I slept with the lights on, for more days then I care to admit.
Eventually, my fear diminished. It had been a week, and nothing bad had happened. I had just been silly and scared. I was too high strung these days; I probably needed a vacation. I resolved to take one as soon as I could get a few days off from work..
Drowsiness came easier that evening as I pondered what fabulous place I should visit on vacation. For the first time in a week, I shut the lights off before laying down. Sleep had almost fully claimed me when the motion detector lights came on outside my house, snapping me immediately back to alertness.
It’s just a dog, I told myself, pulling the covers more tightly around my shoulders. Or a cat, a neighborhood cat tripped the sensors. The lights went off and I exhaled. My relief lasted a full twenty seconds before the motion detector lights on a second time.
My phone pinged in the silence, a sound that almost made me piss myself. It was a notification from the security system I had installed last year. The home security package came with a camera for the front door, one that took a picture and sent an alert to my phone whenever anyone came within five feet of it. In the weeks after I’d gotten the new system, I got picture messages nearly daily: the mailman, an inquisitive squirrel, one time, a bee. I was getting them so frequently that I’d changed the settings to only alert me at night, and since then I’ve gotten only two photo notifications: one on mischief night, one on halloween, both ding-dong-ditchers having harmless (though annoying) fun. Those had been the only times – until now.
With shaking hands I unlocked my phone and opened the app. I couldn’t immediately tell what I was looking at; the image was unclear. As I stared at it, I saw something that made my stomach turn. There was a shape there on the porch, in range of the camera but out of the light. Just barely out of the light, as if whomever – or whatever – was out there wanted to avoid being seen and knew exactly how to do so.
As I was zooming in on the photo’s shadows, my phone pinged a second time. A second photo came up. This time, it showed only darkness. I leapt to my feet, sprinting to the window. The porch light was still on, as were the motion detector lights. But the picture I was looking at showed only pure black. Something was covering the camera.
My heart jumped to my throat. I opened a web browser and typed in the security company name, searching for a number to call. Maybe they were having a system glitch, maybe they could have someone come over to check…
The search didn’t go through.
My WiFi was down.
My blood seemed to turn to ice in my veins, but somehow my body started working on autopilot. Holding my breath, I crept out of my bedroom, heading for the laundry room and the router within it. I’d reset the internet router and everything would be fine. This was just a ridiculous coincidence. As I walked, I traced one hand along the wall to keep from falling in the darkness, and dialed 911 with the other.
I think I already knew, before I even put the phone to my ear. Knew that it wouldn't work. Knew that my cellular service had been disabled.
After what felt like an eternity I made it to the laundry room, with Guinevere right behind me. There’s a small window in it, close to the ceiling, more for ventilation than anything else. It let in the moonlight – not a lot, but just enough to see by. When my eyes adjusted to the silvery darkness, I saw that the router’s cable had been cut.
We are in here now, Guinevere and I, in the laundry room, waiting for morning. I am counting my breaths, imagining each inhalation to be the tick of a clock that is ticking towards sunrise – a sunrise that can’t come soon enough, and that may not come for me at all.
The sounds have started, sounds of entering.
The strategic splintering of wood. A metallic rasp I can’t identify. And then footsteps. Unhurried and thorough footsteps, pacing through every inch of my house. The sounds of doors opening and closing as the footsteps check every room with a chillingly methodical patience. The sound of furniture being moved, of cabinets being thrown ajar, of curtains whistling open, and then being shaken.
And the sound of the footsteps, always the footsteps, growing louder as they creep closer to my hiding spot, inch by inch, room by room. It can’t be much longer now. I’ve already counted one thousand breaths.
The ephemeral moonlight is dwindling now, and soon we will be in total darkness. What little light remains illuminates Guinevere’s enormous eyes. She is sitting in my lap, those otherworldly eyes locked on mine. Those eyes that seem so human.
As I count my breaths I remind myself that cats aren’t people. I tell myself that the look in her eyes isn’t a look of hopelessness, or of sadness, or of finality.
As the footsteps stop in front of the laundry room door, I lie to myself one more time, telling myself that the unmistakable look in Guinevere’s eyes is a look of something – anything – other than goodbye.
There is a terrible groaning noise as the door is wrenched off its hinges. I force myself to keep my eyes open. Guinevere closes hers.

2020.10.01 19:38 throwaway_2142382354 Lessons Learned

Throw away account (obviously) and a LONG post (sorry! I started writing and it all just came gushing out...).
A few months ago, I (35/HLM) decided to swallow my pride and search for answers online for the lack of intimacy in my marriage. As I'm sure everyone here is aware, the rabbit hole that is Google took me all over the web, but I kept seeing links to Reddit, which I had avoided until now (nothing against it, I'm just not much of an internet person).
Wow. Not only did my situation have a NAME, but there were hundreds of thousands of members in this community (I'm sure some are duplicates, but I digress). I've been lurking (I have a love/hate relationship with that word) here for a few months, reading other people's stories, successes, and failures, and I've realized that I could probably actually write a very long and accurate post here by just copying and pasting paragraphs from other posts....I can't say that there's been a single post that fit me like a glove, but aggregating experiences has produced an uncanny resemblance to my current situation (with the exception of my origin story, which I'll go into now for context).
DISCLAIMER: I've made some grievous mistakes that I regret literally every single day, everything from words (or lack thereof) to actions. What I write here may trigger some of you, and I apologize in advance...I just need to get this out there and vent since I have no one else to safely bounce my experiences off of besides my counselor. So, without further ado...
My relationship with my wife (38/LLF) began 13 years ago (not innocently enough...), when she was still with her older BF at the time who was a complete dick to her and actually had a secret family behind her back, and CONSTANTLY cheated on her, whether it was on work trips or just when she was out working or at school. Our relationship grew very organically, and she made the first moves on me (which I loved). I had never been involved with someone who was attached before, and the thrill of the forbiddingness of it all brought everything to a new level. Well, a few months in he figured it out, and broke up with her, which she was actually excited about so we wouldn't need to sneak around anymore. This is a crucial moment, because I really liked her (she was quickly becoming my best friend, and we seemed it hit it off on everything), but also wasn't ready to settle down with a single partner.
Enter my emotional shortcomings. I grew up in a very strict military household where sharing your opinions and thoughts were encouraged as long as they were the exact same as my parents. I became extremely good at bottling up emotions and opinions, and was TERRIBLE at being honest with myself and others on how I'm feeling and what's going on in my head. So, despite these warnings in my head, I did my best to match her enthusiasm as we officially became a couple. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED hanging out with her and talking with her, and like most new relationships, the sex and intimacy was amazing, even if I noticed a lack of enthusiasm for foreplay and other non-PIV actions. That was okay at the time though, because we were doing it 1-2 times a week, maybe a little less, and the actual sex was fantastic. However, I still had plans for my education and career, which involved moving to another state to finish up my undergraduate degree (this was always out in the open, she knew my goals). She became very upset at this, and told me how selfish it was to leave her like that given our situation, so I made some passing comment about her moving to said state with me while I finished up school, and she jumped on the idea. I had a lot of mixed emotions about this, but of course being the good military brat that I was, I kept them to myself.
I ended up enjoying living with her more than I thought I would (this was my first time living with a SO), and we were basically in our honeymoon phase at this point, so we definitely had a lot of fun. But, I started to notice things in her personality that rubbed me the wrong way. She didn't like my friends, and subtly started removing me from their sphere of influence. Female friends all of a sudden became an absolute no-no, to the point where I couldn't even tell her about having to work with other females in school on a strictly "let get this assignment shit done and go home" basis. "Just talk to her, be honest and open!" you say?
How familiar are you with the enneagram scale on personality? I've found it to be much more accurate with characterizing people and their behavior than the oft-lauded acronyms. My wife (GF at this point in time) is an equal mix between a 1 (The Reformer - The Rational, Idealistic Type: Principled, Purposeful, Self-Controlled, and Perfectionistic) and an 8 (The Challenger - The Powerful, Dominating Type: Self-Confident, Decisive, Willful, and Confrontational). I am equal parts 9 (The Peacemaker - The Easygoing, Self-Effacing Type: Receptive, Reassuring, Agreeable, and Complacent) and 7 (The Enthusiast - The Busy, Fun-Loving Type: Spontaneous, Versatile, Distractible, and Scattered). We should balance each other out, but I quickly found that instead of balance, we would entrench ourselves further in our own stubborn ruts. If she didn't agree with something, or had an opinion on something/someone, you better agree with her and get on her page or you are WRONG and need to do better. Having female friends and classmates was not on the list of accepted character traits, and the arguments that would ensue were far too heated for what the discussion should have/could have been.
Still, I didn't want to keep upsetting her (I'm a Peacemaker, after all), after all she and her BF broke up because of me, and she moved to this state with me, so I owed her. At least, I owed her the reassuring words she wanted to hear (is what I justified to myself). I never cheated on her while at school, physically or emotionally, but I did hide and cover up when I worked or talked with other females (it was impossible not to...most of my classes only had 7-8 students in them, half of which were female, and we were all in the same program, so lots of classes together those few years). Yes, hindsight is 20-20, and the signs were there that this was not a healthy relationship...but I wasn't healthy, I just didn't know it yet.
Fast-forward through two years of this. I've graduated, we've moved back to our home state, and we're both working full-time. We're still very happy and have a ton of fun together, but there are super-heated arguments happening more frequently. We're still having sex 1-2 times a week at this point, but foreplay has all but disappeared, and the other non-PIV acts such as oral are waning as well. I don't say anything, because I know I'm not supposed to voice these kinds of opinions. I accept it, and am grateful that we're having any physical intimacy at all, but the thought lingers at the back of my mind. And the arguments are starting to take a toll. She gets very verbally and emotionally abusive when she's angry (not to mention vindictive) and several years of these arguments have started to erode at my sense of worth and self-confidence. Then, the unthinkable (for me) happened.
As I mentioned earlier, foreplay was no longer happening, so it was straight to sex when she was in the mood. And when I mean straight to sex, I mean I better be ready-to-go before my pants come off, without any external influence. Well, one day I wasn't ready yet (physically...I was certainly ready mentally), and she went nuclear on me. It had to be because I was sleeping around, or having an affair, or gay, or some dark secret. I tried to explain to her that there was a lot of pressure to perform right away, and sometimes I just need a little bit of physical encouragement to get me in the zone, not to mention I had an extremely stressful job at the time. That didn't cut it for her...she had never experienced a guy not being ready to go immediately, and she was insulted. This same scenario played out a few times over the next couple of years (not many, but enough to make it a topic of discussion even today).
Did I mention I'm the HL in this relationship? I was (and still am) CONSTANTLY trying to initiate with her, usually daily. And it wasn't just to satiate my biological urge, I genuinely wanted to be intimate with her, and express love in a physical manner. I am absolutely a giver in sex...I LOVE to make my partner feel good, to feel wanted and desired and sexy. Of course, I'm a man and love receiving, too, and would never turn down an offer for this (or so I thought). But, sometimes there are just too many external stressors and I can't turn them off long enough to turn myself on. This was rare, but it happened a handful of times, and hasn't actually happened in about 5 years now.
The sex becomes less frequent. Any other physical intimacy almost completely vanished. She is excelling at her job in and we live in an area I did NOT want to move back to, which I repeatedly voiced during our time together. But, I wanted to be supportive of her, so we moved back here. She almost instantly changes to become a "better adult". She's taking everything in life much more seriously, and has less willingness to enjoy the recreational activities that brought us together in the first place. I, on the other hand, have a very different view of "adulting" - get your shit done that needs to get done, then play however you choose. She didn't agree with this mantra, and another wedge starts to grow between us.
Anyway, we've now been together for a few years, had a lot of good times and some shitty times as well, but we're still together. I'm also now feeling guilty for having not married her at this point, and I've certainly received cues from her to get that done. Of course I love her and still consider her my best friend, but I can't shake the feeling that she's not the one. "Too bad!" my brain tells me..."suck it up, buttercup, and be a man. You've taken this many years of her life from her, put a ring on her finger and do what you're supposed to do." So, I propose, she says yes, and we start planning the rest of our lives together.
During our time together, our arguments and her deliberately cruel words have eaten a hole in me that I hadn't noticed yet (or chose to ignore). My sense of worth is less than zero, and I don't feel like I'm a man if I communicate any of this to her, so the feeling builds and builds and constantly devours my self-value. Due to some very specific attacks on me and my personality and hobbies, I don't feel like ANYONE can see value in me or be attracted to me, and the fact that our sex life has dramatically decreased (1-2 times a month) and is apparent that it feels like a chore for her takes my mind to some very dark places. Worried about where this is heading, but not able to articulate myself clearly, I suggest couples counseling, and she agrees. It is not productive for either of us.
Obviously, if my fiancée doesn't find me attractive and has repeatedly told me no woman would want me, then the only way someone like me can get physical satisfaction is to pay for it. Now, I'm not a bad looking guy by any stretch of the imagination, and I never had any issues getting girls or having hook ups before I met my wife, but years of this mentality, coming from someone who you care deeply about, can wreck your psyche. Also, I'm clearly not equipped at this point to communicate my feelings...but what I CAN do is hide things. So, desperate for human contact, I go to my first massage parlor. In the moment, it was exciting. Afterwards, the shame and guilt and self-loathing induced are enough to crush my already teetering sense of worth into nothing. Are you familiar with the addiction cycle?
That wasn't the only time it happened...despite the feelings afterwards, my desperation pulls me to do this dozens of times over the course of several years. Now, this was just (yes, I get that "just" attempts to minimize my actions, but hang in there) massage parlors, and there was never any sex involved...just hand stuff. Well, this is a slippery slope, and before I knew it, I was in a hotel room with an escort. This experience was extremely disappointing, and left me feeling even more shitty about myself. So, naturally, I tell myself "it'll be better next time!" I do this four more times. Ugh...I'm making myself sick thinking about this, but I need to get it out to someone.... This behavior wasn't constant, but the fact that it was happening at all is still a major problem, one that I tell myself I can stop at any time (ha!).
The day after the last time, my wife (who's at home with our 18-month old daughter) at this point gets a notification on her phone from Google..."How would you rate your stay at the Comfort Inn?" Oh yeah, something you should know about my wife...she's an armchair detective. She can DIG into things when she wants to, and she's very good at it. Needless to say, I was (rightfully) kicked out of the house at this point, and moved back in with my parents who were just a few miles away (one of the reasons I did not want to come back to this area). Also, and this will come into play later, my dad had just been diagnosed with "the most aggressive case of colon cancer" his oncologist had ever seen.
I'm thinking the marriage is over, I'll never see my daughter again, and I am spiraling into despair. In a rare moment of lucidity for me, I try something I never wanted to do...I sought professional help. I find a counselor, reassess my priorities in life, and start getting my shit back together, all while living at home during my dad's cancer treatments. Eventually, my wife invites me back into the house (in the guest room), and we (I) start talking, really talking, for the first time in my life. I'm not yet equipped to deal with her in full confrontation mode, so I am repeatedly told how wrong my opinions and views are, and how my priorities and wants are those of a horny middle-schooler, not a man. I vow to step it up, and I do for a while! I'm no longer paying for attention or seeking it elsewhere...instead, I look inward and start pursuing my own hobbies to distract me from what is now the complete lack of physical connection (obviously).
Do you remember that I display behaviors in line with that of an addictive personality? My wife was not a fan of my hobbies, some of them old (games), some of them new (real nerdy stuff that I never thought I'd get into, but not having friends anymore to hang out and no chance of physical intimacy forces you to find things to do alone, so here I was). Sex and physical release is exchanged for secret purchases to get me more of my hobby materials, and for smoking way too much weed. I'm not hiding extra-marital shenanigans anymore, I'm hiding stupid shit, anything at all that gives me the illusion of control over my life. While other areas of my life are improving, I find things to hyper-focus on and escape the reality that I've created.
About a year later, my father passed away from his cancer. I found out shortly afterwards that my family of origin and my wife blame me for my father's rapid decline and eventual death...if I hadn't made those selfish choices, he would have most likely recovered, but the stress of having to deal with me was the nail in his proverbial (and literal) coffin. You can probably imagine how I'm feeling about myself at this point. It feels like I have no allies (other than my counselor), and no outlet since I was mocked and patronized even for my hobbies, so I do what I'm best at. I make selfish choices and then hide them from everyone. Two months after my father passed, I went back to a massage parlor, and then did it again one more time a few weeks later. I stopped at that point, overwhelmed with grief, shame, and self-loathing, but in my desperate stupidity, I used a credit card to pay for one of the parlor visits, which was of course discovered. At this point, the secret purchases are also discovered, so everything is coming back out into the open. I get kicked out again, and am forced to move back in with my mom, who is still harboring resentment over my role in my dad's death.
A few months of separation and a lot of counseling later (both individual and couples) and I'm back in the house (the guest room again). This time, I'm better equipped to talk about how I'm feeling, how her words and actions make me feel, and why I do the things I do (create and keep secrets for selfish desires). I'm able to identify and stay aware of triggers and things that make me spiral back into regression. I'm lucky that she's taken me back, and I know it, even if she threatens to kill me and reminds me how worthless I am...it's all worth it to see my daughter each day.
This last personal relapse was several years ago, and I am happy to admit that I haven't attempted to go back to paying for attention, nor have I looked outside the marriage for attention. Instead, I'm still seeing my counselor several times a month, journaling, meditating, eating healthier, exercising when I can. I'm much more engaged with both my wife and our (now two) kids, and I work hard to make their lives better. But, there is obviously a very dark shadow cast on myself as a person and on our relationship. I am well aware that my actions have forever changed our relationship, and I own my choices and am working to become a better person, as an individual, a partner, and a father.
"Wait, this is DB, and you had another kid and you're still together! What's the deal?"
I'm glad you asked. My wife and I both wanted to give our daughter a sibling, and we didn't want to wait any longer, so we very clinically would have sex when she was ovulating...but there was no passion to it, and certainly no fun. Luckily for her, I'm apparently pretty virile, and was able to get her pregnant very quickly for both kids so the sex stopped pretty much immediately after she found out she was pregnant. Why are we still together? Well, we don't see eye-to-eye on most things, and she thinks I'm incapable and incompetent in pretty much every aspect of being a human being (even without my destructive behavior, she has a very high pedestal from which she passes judgment on those around her), but one thing we both agree on and she recognizes is our ability to parent extremely well as a team. We are on the same page pretty much with every decision that involves the kids, from play time, to discipline, to schooling, everything. And she knows how much I love my kids, which is an insane amount.
This brings me to my current DB situation. Like I mentioned at the beginning, I've made some terrible mistakes for which I am unabashedly ashamed, but they're my mistakes and I own them. I have been working incredibly hard to become a better person, and those around me have noticed this change and commented on it, even my wife. I didn't deserve a second or third chance, but I got it, and I'm making the most of it now. That being said, she has also chosen twice to stay with me, to accept me back, and even to have another kid with me. I know I hurt her mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, and I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive myself for that, but I go out of my way to show her how much I care about her, how sexy I think she is (for the record, she was and is HOT...even at 8 months pregnant, she would have random guys come up to her and tell her how hot she was, regardless of my presence with her).
During our entire relationship, whether it was back when I was in school, or when I was paying for attention, I found her extremely attractive, and have made that very known to her...to the point where she has asked me to stop telling her. I haven't received a compliment from her since before we were married (before everything came out), but have tried not to let it get to me. I still struggle greatly with self-worth and value, but I try not to let my insecurities control me. That being said, I want to feel wanted and desired, and I haven't felt that since before we were married. She stopped initiating sex during our engagement, which I chalked up to anxiety and stress about the wedding, but she's never tried again since then...it has always been me, and as many of you are all too aware, that rejection takes a toll after years of not only being told no, but also only receiving criticisms and insults, and never encouragement or compliments or anything vaguely close to flirting.
These issues with our intimacy started before I began my deep dive into selfish secrets, but she blames it all on either those actions or my not being a man (I am constantly being told that I am just a middle-schooler in a 35-year-old's body, which is a self-deprecating mental battle with which I am still struggling through with my counselor). And here's where we get to familiar territory. I've brought up sex and intimacy (or lack thereof) with her and our couples counselor numerous times, and she ALWAYS finds a way to either change the subject, turn it back around on me, or minimize my needs. According to her, no normal couple has sex more than once or twice a month, and certainly no woman wants to have sex more than that. Foreplay and anything that's not PIV sex is strictly for porn (which she used to love), and is not something normal spouses engage in. The fact that I'm asking for sex and trying to initiate almost daily is very immature and selfish of me, and she shouldn't have to deal with that. But, masturbation is also frowned upon, and she wants me to tell her when I do it 1) for transparency's sake (which I've obliged) and 2) so that she can remind me how gross and depressing I am. I don't do it very often (maybe once or twice a week) even though I want to, just so I can be ready to go on the off-chance that she is receptive to my advances.
It's been three months since we've had sex. And before that, it happened four times in the course of four months. And before that, it was nine months between sex dates. It's been six or so years since the last time she gave me oral (I would probably kill someone at this point to go down on her) or even sensually touched me with her hands (this all stopped even before everything came out). She can't comprehend how I'm so horny all the time, and I can't comprehend how she's never horny. When we do have sex, it's clearly pity sex and a chore and always exactly the same flavor of vanilla, which I hate but am so desperate that I will never turn down.
I've had major issues. I've made major mistakes. But I'm working my ass off to become a better person for the ones I care about. She's had zero inclination to work on her anger issues (which she gleefully acknowledges) or her over-zealous judging of other people and the things they like, and as far as she's concerned, her sex-drive is on par with every other woman out there, and a real man wouldn't be bugging her about it. I've never begged for sex and never will, but I have begged her to talk with me about sex. Is there something about me that turns her off? Is there something I need to be doing to turn her on that she's not getting? Should I be touching her a different way (when I'm allowed to touch her, which is rare, and is never reciprocated)? I'm not a mind-reader, and I'm trying to keep an open dialog on everything, especially the subjects that are uncomfortable...
But a real man wouldn't need to ask those questions. A real man would know and figure it out without ever having to ask her. And a real man wouldn't feel the need to even talk about it. It's absolutely insane that it's so important to me, and THAT is the real issue here, not her lack of libido...physical intimacy is obviously just another addiction that I need to fight to overcome.
I don't know what to do at this point. I still love my wife (she's the mother of my children and my best friend...) and I want her to be happy. I've been made to feel like my desire to want intimacy with her is a flaw that needs to be corrected, and that's been echoed by my mom and my older sister (my only sibling...my wife has made my family painfully aware of my "shortcomings"). There are so many nights where I tell myself "don't even try to give her attention or affection or initiate sex, she doesn't want it from you" but I end up doing it anyway because I can't bring myself to NOT do it, and then I'm dealing with the guilt of "pressuring her" into having sex with me (even though she doesn't) as well as the feelings that well up from the countless rejections. Then, I read posts on here about people only having sex 1-2 times per week or a few times a month, and my first (selfish) reaction is "you lucky SOB's, you don't even know how lucky you are." But, then I remember how I felt when sex was declining slowly in frequency in my relationship, how I felt that it was torturously rare for a couple our age and in good health, and I become more sympathetic (still supremely jealous though).
My advice to anyone reading this (I doubt anyone is in a situation quite like mine) is learn to communicate early and often. It's work, and it's not fun, but it could save you heartache down the road, especially while you still have options open. Don't end up like me...one of my biggest fears as I matured into adulthood was having a lack of intimacy in my marriage (like my parents did), and sure enough I'm living that nightmare that I helped create.
For fuck's sake, TALK with your SO if your lack of sex or other physical requirements are not being met...maybe it's something you can both work on, or maybe incompatibilities are starting to show themselves. If they do, then get out while you can...I promise BOTH of you will be happier in the long run, even if it feels like the end of the world now.
I'm sure I've left things out that would add more context to this or better explain things, but I never intended to write this much, and my brain is fried at this point. Plus, I'm finding that I am feeling emotionally exhausted from getting this all out there. If you're still reading, I can't thank you enough for your time...even if you're filled with hate and rage towards me and agree completely with my wife, I'm still glad you took the time to read this. Feel free to reach out with questions, or if you just want to talk. Thank you.

2020.10.01 19:31 _herbert-earp_ Cybersec Degree PenTest+ and CySA+ change

Did anyone else in the cyber security bachelor's degree have their course change to PenTest+ and CySA+?
My mentor told me not to take the web security/CIW WSA because it was being replaced with PenTest+.
I went to the main WGU website and saw that they added the CySA+ certificate to the degree program, but neither have been updated in my degree plan.
Did it change for anybody else or were you able to get it changed after contacting your program mentor?
Edit: Spoke with my Mentor, he said "Yes, C837 getting replaced as we discussed with Pen + tomorrow. However, C842 will be replaced with the CySA+ at a later date."

Artificial intelligence plays a major role in the IoT

Image: Andres Urena Unsplash
Businesses across the globe are leveraging the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) in various industries to create new and optimised business opportunities.
To take the complete advantage of the IoT, says Harnil Oza, CEO of Hyperlink InfoSystem, it has been coupled with artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that help businesses arrive at sensible decisions without any human intervention.
The substantial growth of IoT has been observed many times now. However, the impact of AI on the personal and professional level is understated. Of course, the result is gigantic and will often flourish by combining it with the incredible concept of IoT.

Understanding the role of AI in the IoT revolution

AI is assumed to perform plenty of smart tasks like language translation, voice recognition, decision making, etc. without human intervention. On the other hand, IoT includes a chain of interconnected gadgets that transfer information over a network.
IoT gadgets have entered our lives and seek to bring an advanced level of comfort. These gadgets rely on web connectivity and produce incredible amounts of information relevant to user behaviours, preferences, personal details, etc. Thus, they cannot get overlooked. But, a lot of businesses are totally clueless about saving and processing such vast amounts of data. This is obstructing the growth and potential of IoT.
In this case, AI can hugely help to accumulate the bulk of data that is processed by the IoT gadgets. It can evaluate the data and make sense of it. Thus, AI is forecasted to be the chief driver to initiate the unusual growth of the IoT revolution.
This massive shift and ongoing disruption engendered by AI and IoT is absolutely redefining the technological landscape. It is anticipated to be significant in the emerging times. There is a burgeoning need for these technologies, with a rising number of organisations and industries always adopting and applying it in various situations.

Empowering evolving benefits for businesses

The developing frameworks of AI were only capable of managing a slim categories of tasks. They were not scalable and often required human intrusion. But, constant studies and advancements in technology have led to the transformation of AI in the IoT concept, which has given rise to smart machines.
Utilising the power and capability of AI, smart machines will ease the tasks by executing them in minutes, which could otherwise take weeks or months to finish. These machines will totally evolve the way most businesses do business, bringing a high comfort and ease.
The combination of the two evolving techs is anticipated to dramatically change the competitive landscape by needing all businesses to improve their product portfolios to emerging realities. This will bring new concepts across all the sectors.
Four fundamental changes that will get activated by the competitive situation are:
Greater revenues: The joint effect of AI and IoT will be advantageous for many sectors in terms of huge revenues and returns. IoT gadget manufacturers, IoT data providers, alongside businesses providing application services based on smart sensors, are anticipated to be at the winning edge.
Increased safety standards: With up-to-date monitoring, a strict check and failure prevention is possible. This will increase the overall safety and security standards, thus boost productivity. This will also help reduce the loss of lives and damage to assets.
Reduced expenses: Evaluating the devices by smart detectors, smart electricity meters, and sensors fitted domestic appliances, etc. will come to less operational expenditure for households and businesses both.
Better customer experience: Smart sensors come with plenty of opportunities for enhancing the customer experience. These detectors can know the user preferences and adjust their values accordingly. For instance, thermostats in smart homes can adapt to the suitable temperature settings of various users staying in that same home.

Impact on different industries

1. Manufacturing
All sorts of manufacturing sectors like automobiles, aircraft, household appliances, f&b, mining, and others sync smart sensors into their machinery to perform future analyses and increase productivity. They are seeking to develop an autonomous industrial unit, which will be the next rage. These sensors will help industries detect the areas with threats, and thus, lessening machinery falls.
2. Smart Homes
IoT has led to the rise of the smart home concepts where all the gadgets are linked to one another via a shared network. By integrating this with AI, all these devices can interpret their owner’s instructions and make smart decisions accordingly.
An intelligence home tech aims to make our lives better and comfy by presenting a chance to regulate the devices remotely, irrespective of the location. For instance, you can pre-plan the time when your coffee shall be brewed; your tv shows shall be turned on, etc.
3. Body sensors
Smart detectors are highly instrumental in sensing different activities to balance proper health. A plethora of pharmaceutical companies are funding in medical sensors that can help the patients in tracking their tasks to better their health. For instance, these sensors can help evaluate blood sugar levels and release insulin at times of an emergency.
These sensors are getting used by construction companies to see the load capacity and their workers’ posture to avoid any sort of injuries and increase efficiency.
4. Airlines
Sensors are placed in aircraft that flawlessly monitors the importance of many risks and errors. These sensors forecast future errors and their degree of severity to lessen aircraft downtime and increase passenger safety. Airline companies can even use these sensors to spot the maintenance issues that can cause flight delays and cancellations.
5. Oil Rigs
Oil industries have to invest lots of funds in procuring oil drilling machinery. These machineries can cause a massive loss to the businesses. Oil companies can leverage smart sensors by attaching it to the oil machinery to make preventative maintenance analysis, and cut operational costs.

Wrapping Up

The joint effect of AI and IoT will undoubtedly reshape our personal and professional lives in ways that can’t be imagined by most businesses today. It will not only replace tiresome and boring human jobs but will vastly revamp the competitive scenario by giving a benefit to early AI adopters in terms of unique business opportunities.

Preface to DUNE written by Denis Villeneuve (via Le Point POP)
Dune opens with a slight dizziness: humanity survived some twenty millennia when Paul Atréides was born. This promise appears even more disturbing today, as we collectively know that our world is vacillating in silence, before our eyes, as in those frightening dreams, due to sleep paralysis, where the body no longer responds to consciousness. We hear apocalyptic echoes daily from scientists predicting a collapse in the balance of our res, but we barely budge, remaining convinced that our mastery of technology will ultimately overwhelm nature. This fantasy of domination of the elements does not date from yesterday. We have always had a penchant for challenging the gods. Obviously, we have gradually lost our sacred relationship to the world. This is one of the reasons why I believe Dune is completely current.
If the sentence "The XXth century will be mystical or will not be" attributed to André Malraux is indeed his, I dare to imagine that he foresaw the potential complete desacralization of the natural world by the hypnotic exacerbation of a savage capitalism. With this tendency to objectify nature overflowing western borders, neoliberal policies and their globalization turning into real planetary dogmas, economic religion now reigns over all spheres of human activity. Everything can now be bought, even the conscience. This system is overpowering, ruthless, cheating, with colonialist overtones, sometimes even generating psychopathic corporate entities, in short this system is Harkonnen. And to overthrow it and survive its consequences, we may have to follow in the footsteps of Muad'Dib.
The idea for Dune was born in 1957, when Frank Herbert flew over sandbanks bordering the Oregon coast between Coos Bay and Florence. He then moved from Seattle to write an article on an ecological experiment: a new species of grass had just been introduced there with the aim of stopping the spread of the dunes which threatened vegetation, roads and plans for drinking water. From the power of nature and the human effort to try to control it, a momentum was born that would animate all of his creation for the next twenty-five years...
Frank Herbert explores, in particular, the links between ecology and religious forces by orchestrating a true celebration of the living and its interpretation, reintegrating the notion of the sacred in the obscure folds of the natural world. The manic and poetic precision with which he succeeds in creating the immense ecosystems of Arrakis is truly moving to me. A very scientific logic is applied in the description of the smallest details which constitute the habitats of Dune. "The frankincense bush and the smoke tree, the sand verbena and the creosote bush, the pocket fox and the desert hawk" exist by themselves as a poetic extension of what constitutes our terrestrial ecosystems. These same species are in turn reinterpreted by the imagination of the inhabitants of the Arrakis deserts, the Fremen, a poetic people of extraordinary technical, even artistic ingenuity, living in symbiosis with the elements. And right in the center of their daydream sits the immense entity of Shai-hulud, the giant sand worm, incarnation of the living god of the desert spaces of Dune.
This Fremen symbiosis where life and death are hand-to-hand and in balance, where science and the imagination of the biosphere evolve in a common drive towards truth, is a powerful call to humility. Dune vibrates the unconscious strings of our first perception of the world, to find there a sacred dimension, a thought in relation with the marvelous of the living, with Ayat, the sign of life. Because our future will see our relationship with the First Mother become sacred again, or it will not be. The human beings of Dune are therefore melancholy isolated, struck by the power of evocation of the landscapes which brings them back to a welcome vulnerability and humility. The desert inscribes itself there as a territory of the divine, but also as a mirror of consciousnesses where silence reveals the rhythm of hearts and breaths. The infinite always sending us brutally to our interior life, the physical exploration of the Arrakis desert being accompanied by an involuntary plunge into the unconscious. We descend slowly within ourselves through the dunes, a constantly changing labyrinth, where the source of our most intimate ailments too often seems to slip between our fingers, elusive like sand, at the risk of losing their sanity. With each new dune, a new hope, like the comfort of prayer when one indulges in it without waiting for an answer.
From his first contact with the deep desert, Paul Atréides feels strangely at home there, as in a house where he would have lived part of his childhood. What was to be uprooting for the young man gradually turns back home, like a furious and demented déjà vu. Paul is amazed by the survival strategies of the living, but above all transported by an introspective movement where he comes into contact with his own finality and this bitter melancholy of those who perceive things with too much acuity. And if the desert is reassuring for Paul because it is singularly familiar to him, it also becomes just as confusing because this familiarity is accompanied by a sudden and dazzling opening of his inner eye, in full awakening state. His baptism of the desert, chaired by Shai-hulud himself, opening wide the floodgates of his mind, Paul receives the desert in the face and his subconscious fully surfaces.
Like a powerful movement of inspiration, a painful epiphany, in which he perceives the world as it really is, but above all where he has a presentiment of what his real share of responsibility will be in the wake of the cataclysms to come. A waking dreamer is therefore in the center of a burnt landscape, a sleepwalker slowly progressing on the tightrope of doubt, overhanging the abyss of collective nightmares, slowly guessing that part of his innocence will have to die for him to survive the severity of its new reality. Paul will have to become an adult, not knowing how to protect the vestiges of his childhood, torn alive by the winds of a Coriolis.
When he was accepted by the Fremen, Paul Atreides chose Muad'Dib as his adopted name. The Muad'Dib is a small mouse-kangaroo, admired by the Fremen for its great ability to adapt to the desert. Paul will survive the deluge of hatred that descends on his family and his people because he will have assimilated elements of this Fremen culture of survival which attracts him intuitively. He embraces this new culture, he does not come to contaminate it but to blend into it. This openness to others, against the tide of colonialist movements, heralds a new era. Accepting complete paradigm shifts will mean survival for Paul and his mother Jessica. The notion of adaptability is one of the keys to the novel. “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change,” says theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking. Frank Herbert maintains that “survival is the ability to swim in strange water”.
I also have a special affection for this absolutely brilliant idea of sandwalk, the "sandwalk", as it was called in the original English version of the novel. The Fremen who venture into the sand plains must force themselves to imitate in their walk the chaotic sounds of the wind on the sand if they are to avoid perishing in Shai-hulud's belly; sand worms being attracted by all forms of rhythms, mechanical or human. It is for me the strongest image of the novel: the human being having to imitate nature as humbly as possible in order to survive it. This surprising survival strategy emerges from a physically demanding and exhausting choreography resulting in an almost artistic performance.
But as Frank Herbert envisioned a cynical world whose foundations are built on multiple, interlocking machinations, Paul finds himself trapped in a masterful spider web woven by another of my favorite ideas from the novel: the congregation of the Bene Gesserit Sisters, of which her mother Jessica, herself is a member. His adventure turning into a real tragedy, the Fremen, now his brothers, his sisters, who at first appeared to be his salvation are in reality a trap. Their religion having been influenced by the Bene Gesserit, the Fremen see in Paul a possible messianic figure who could possibly guide them towards the realization of their ancestral dream: to regain possession of Arrakis from the hands of the exploiters and to restore balance to the abused ecosystems. Paul must learn to preserve his free will, while he discovers himself the instrument of a thousand-year-old manipulation, like this unconscious force of genes which directs us without our knowing it.
Embracing indigenous thought, glimpsing their dream of a world with restored ecological balance, and opening up to the mysteries of Dune's ecosystems, Paul is confronted with their religious fervor. He apprehends the great revolutionary movement which will take shape in his name. Thanks to him, humanity will perhaps be able to find its way and re-establish the sacred space reserved for nature, without falling into the bloody trap, he hopes with all his heart, of fanaticism.
If we accept cinema as a bridge between the world of dreams and reality, and if this daydream proposed by the adaptation of Dune is inspired by the novel and the trajectories that we have collectively taken, like Frank Herbert, I can only anticipate with fear the violence that will inspire a nature finally cornered at the foot of the wall. Obviously, if we don't change our trajectory, like Paul Atreides, we will have to learn to swim in strange waters ”.

Patients in hospital (as of 29 September) 2,276
Patients admitted (as of 27 September) 141,964
The testing pillars
Pillars 1 and 2 are swab tests targeted at those who are sick and with symptoms. They look for the presence of the virus itself. Pillar 1 and 2 tests are only counted when processed. There is no longer a separate 'made available' number.
Pillar 3 tests are designed to identify if a person has antibodies in their system, which means that they have had coronavirus at some point, but they do not test for the presence of the virus itself (as in pillars 1 and 2). Tests in pillar 3 are counted when they are processed by a lab.
This pillar does not report people tested or positive cases because tests are anonymised before being sent to a lab. Positive cases for pillar 3 are different to pillars 1 and 2 so should not be classed together.
Testing in pillar 4 is designed to understand the spread of the virus and the reliability of different testing methods.
As with the other pillars, pillar 4 tests are counted when they are processed by a lab. People testing positive from Pillar 4 PCR swab tests are now included in the positive cases figure. Previously this was not possible to due the inability to deduplicate individuals.
Coronavirus statistic's are no longer available on the 'Coronavirus cases in the UK: daily updated statistics' page. Instead data is provided by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the UK dashboard: https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/

2020.10.01 17:11 wfpoulet Unicode characters show as boxes under KDE and GNOME

I run Manjaro KDE on my computer and have Manjaro GNOME in a VirtualBox. The GNOME system is a fresh install from a few weeks ago that I didn't touch since then.
In both cases, most Unicode characters now show as boxes, both in Dolphin, Kate and Emoji Selector (and in Nautilus/GEdit). It wasn't like that a few weeks ago.
I searched the web and tried any tip I could find dating from the last few years. But nothing works (my setup is probably screwed now).
Something got or is broken, but I'm not a font specialist, and I don't know what is the issue at this point.
Please, Help!? :-)
PS: and a few days ago, Arial stopped showing in the font list in LibreOffice Calc. Suddenly. If only I had done something to my system other than installing updates when they become available...

2020.10.01 16:07 jayc014 I'm never the person that reaches out first

I've always been like that since my young ages. Most of the time I always wait for someone to invite me somewhere or ask to do something in order for me to hang out with people. I feel like most of the time, I don't have the courage to ask and I sit on my side doing nothing. With that said, I wasted many opportunities to meet people and get on dates. I'm in my late 20's and basically all I do is work, gym, sit at home playing games or surfing the web since my job requires a PC. What should I do to improve my social skills?

2020.10.01 15:36 BingeWatcherBot The original “Bartlet4America” News Archive website

Bartlet4America News Archive
I’ve been searching for this old West Wing News archive for weeks now on the “way back machine” and I almost gave up last night too. (So naturally I found it on the very last day I was going to allow myself to spend searching for it of course!) But I’m still glad I searched and finally found it.
I should warn any first time viewers that because it’s an Archive it’s “Main” page lands on the later 2006 articles. I should also warn other West Wing fans that it’s a little bit difficult to navigate compared to any current platforms.
This site includes pretty much every news story, blog, article, and write up about or that could be connected to the series between 1998- 2007.
There’s also various weekly episode write ups and tons of dirt and gossip from the series, cast, behind the scenes, and in the news too.
It even contains very detailed articles about the various high profile and more scandalous rumors even including some of the now completely defunct ones too.
I came across it looking for details about the ensemble casts walk out gamble which they all took over the pay increases they felt were due to them, since the show went from a protagonist led drama to an ensemble led drama almost immediately, according to Aaron Sorkin this change occurred very early on in season one. (Some of those details begin in the middle of the page linked above in the article dated July 13th, 2001 titled “West Wing cast members to hold out”.)
A move that really worked out well for Bradley, John, Allison, & Richard ... but as we all know not so much for Rob.
But this “gamble” and it’s success actually fueled quite a few other such mid-production series regulars and ensemble cast walk outs over contract negotiations too. (Which was actually what sent me looking for it.)
What I didn’t know though was that TWW ensemble had other occasions to almost do this again too.
There’s quite a bit of info from an “at that time” prospective on The West Wing in this web archive, but I personally found the numerous Gossip and Rumor details to be the most fascinating. Especially the ones that either conflicted with each other at the time and or those that we’ve since learned the truth about which renders them false.
I figured I’d share the sites link here because if anyone would enjoy this site it would be my fellow TheWestWing fans.
Edit: I was searching the site to find the details about the Writing staff’s not getting their raises and came across a few compelling articles. I figured since the sites not easy to navigate I’d include the few I came across here.
•June 2001- While I was originally searching for this page From June 2001 for the article titled “West Wing Bosses Defend Writer Cut Backswritten by Michael Schneider for Variety thats filled with the details about TWW’s budget issues and especially their producers not honoring the writing staffs contractually obligated raises and title bumps situation that I’d referenced in a comment below. I came across some other great articles too.
•From July 2001 I came across this article that’s the 6th down included in the July 01’ archive page titled “Will the West Wing Go Up In Smokewritten by Sharon Waxman for The Washington Post so far its one of the more fascinating write ups I’ve come across so far on the site.
I’ve found this one July 01 article to be a truly compelling read. As I read thru it I came across a few things I hadn’t heard much about before. One being the fact that NBC, Warner Studios, and Well’s “ER” ensemble’s pay (of hundreds of thousands per episode in some cases) heavily contributed TWW casts joint “walk out” threat/gamble, as opposed to this more often referenced as all only boiling down to Lowe’s pay situation. However also included here is a controversy (which was apparently major trade news at the time) about the shared Emmy win between Rick Cleveland and Aaron Sorkin for “In Excelsis Deo”. This turned into one hell of a scandal amongst the writers table over Aaron Sorkin’s (apparently admitted) insecurity that he’s afraid “the class might fall in love with the substitute teacher” if he handed over his writing duties and credits. Apparently Cleveland not only wrote a script for that episode (that Aaron later claimed while “belittling” Cleveland was thrown out) but he’d actually provided the entire concept for Toby’s storyline in the episode based on his own fathers life experience. The scandal here continued over lack of any credit or thanking during Aaron’s acceptance speech for the Emmy win that “In Excelsis Deo” received. This is just two little tid-bits from the article, theres really just a ton of info in this piece and so I’ve included it because it was really intriguing to read.
•July 2003
During this search I’d also come across a July 30th, 2003 article titled “A Rebellion In The West Wing” by Verne Gay for Newsday about another instance where the main ensemble cast worked together again for a proposed a 100% pay increase. I included this link because in my post I originally referenced that the cast almost had another occasion to make this gamble again.
•August 2003
I also came across this notable read from the August 2003 Archive too. The write up titled “Stars and Strifedated August 09, 2003 written by Dave Walker for the New Orleans Times which is lengthy but had quite a few interesting inclusions. I loved coming across this quote from John Amos which appears as almost an early coining of “Sorkinese” :
Veteran actor John Amos has made several "West Wing" appearances as Adm. Percy Fitzwallace. “I know it's going to be a change," said Amos. "You don't replace a talent like Aaron Sorkin. “We've all learned to speak Sorkinese, which is a very special language developed by Aaron for the cast
Along with learning that Aaron Sorkin considered David E Kelley his direct competition based on more than just their series continually going head to head in shared time slots. It turns out like Sorkin, David E Kelley also doesn’t hand over his script writing to anyone else and penned them all himself. This is a trait unique to only the two TV series writers.
David E. Kelley, creator of "Ally McBeal," "The Practice," "Boston Public" and the new CBS drama "The Brotherhood of Poland, N.H.," shares at least one trait with Sorkin. Both men have shouldered the entire writing burden for an hour-long drama. Handing off characters to other writers is something that Kelley has attempted before. But he concedes that the transition may prove more difficult for Sorkin.” “I think it's going to be very difficult to approximate his voice," Kelley said. "In addition to him being intimately connected with all his characters, he had a very specific rhythm to his writing style. If it could be easily copied we would see more of it, because it's such an effective rhythm

Pesticide 101 - How to Effectively Treat Most Common Houseplant Pests

Glossary

Spider Mites

Spider mites are one of the most damaging pests and can destroy plants quickly. Under ideal conditions (hot, dry) spider mites can complete their lifecycle from egg -> adult -> more eggs in 3 DAYS. Because of this ability to multiply rapidly they can seemingly come out of nowhere but the worst part is it allows them to develop resistance quicker than most pests. If you try and fail to kill mites all you are doing is breeding super mites with resistance to whatever you just used. This chart shows the activity of many commercially available pesticides: Miticide Activity
The first sign of spider mite damage is fine stippling on leaves that looks like many small holes poked with a needle which is clustered around the veins, especially the central vein. Severely damaged leaves will take on a whitish or greyish appearance. Severe infestations of mites will show up as visible webbing on the bottoms of leaves and covering the growth tips. Spider mite webbing has no pattern and is just a mess of silk. You will be able to clearly see the mites moving on it if it has progressed to that point. Spider mites are true arachnids and so like most spiders they are not susceptible to most insecticides and are controlled better by using pesticides designed specifically for them. There are a few non-pesticide options that can control light infestations if caught early but once they have established themselves you should use miticides designed specifically for spider mites or you are in for an uphill battle.

Non pesticide options:

Miticides:

You can find a 3-pack of 0.5 oz bottles of all 3 of these for sale here. They also sell each one individually in 0.5 oz to 1oz bottles: https://www.organicbti.com/product-page/forbid-avid-and-floramite-spider-mite-treatment-program-inc-top-3-miticides
0.5 oz is a lot more than it sounds like. 0.6ml makes a quart so each bottle makes almost 25 quarts. This will last you a LONG time since its rare you have to spray them more than once to eradicate mites.

Insecticides

The only insecticide I recommend for mites is Bifenthrin. It is fairly effective but ideally used in conjunction with the miticides listed above. It will kill almost anything else too and is not very expensive, only $22 for 16oz bottle. https://www.domyown.com/bifen-it-p-226.html

Mealybugs

Mealybugs are soft-bodied insects that feed by sucking sap from plants. They also excrete honeydew like aphids which leaves a sticky residue and can lead to black sooty mold. The mealybug lifecycle takes approximately 2 months from egg to maturity. Once mature a female can lay hundreds of eggs that hatch within a few days. They are most mobile shortly after hatching. Mealybugs can infest both the foliage and the soil so if they seem to keep coming back after treating them you probably need to treat the soil too. They are frequently found hiding in new growth when there are only a few of them. In larger numbers they can cause plants to shed leaves or even die.

Non pesticide options:

Insecticides:

Thrips

Thrips are very small insects which are only slightly larger than spider mites and hard to see with the naked eye. They are elongated and typically a tan or yellowish color although some species are darker brown or black. Thrips feed by scraping the outside of the leaves off and cause irregular silvery spots. They also damage young leaves as they are forming causing them to be distorted as they grow. They cause similar damage to flowers, infesting flower buds and damaging petals or even causing the flower to abort. In addition to damage from feeding they are also disease carriers and one of the most common vectors for many plant viruses. Some strains of thrips have developed resistance to many pesticides while others are still more easily treatable. Thrips can be annoying to eradicate because they can lay eggs inside of plant parts and some stages of the lifecycle are spent in the soil. Typically it will require several treatments to eradicate them all.

Non pesticide options (not recommended):

Insecticides:

Aphids

Aphids are small insects that feed by sucking sap. They come in many colors although common ones are green, yellow, or black. They produce a lot of sticky honeydew which ants feed on. 9/10 times if you see ants on a plant, they are not there to hurt the plant, they are there to farm aphids. Aphids are an easy pest to treat and only cause a lot of damage if they are present in high numbers. They have an interesting reproductive strategy where the females can give birth to live nymphs who are already pregnant themselves.

Non pesticide options:

Insecticides

Fungus gnats
